Guy Scott Put Zambia First – HH

President Hakainde Hichilema has paid tribute to former Vice-President Dr Guy Lindsay Scott, describing him as a selfless statesman who consistently placed Zambia's national interest above personal ambition.

Speaking during Dr Scott's State Funeral Service in Lusaka today, President Hichilema said the late former Vice-President's life and legacy should serve as an enduring example to both current and future generations of leaders.

The President said Zambia had lost a distinguished son whose steadfast commitment to constitutionalism, peace and public service played a significant role in strengthening the country's democratic foundations.

He noted that, despite having the academic credentials and opportunities to build a career anywhere in the world, Dr Scott chose to make Zambia his permanent home and devoted his life to serving its people.

President Hichilema said Dr Scott served the nation with honour in a number of senior positions, progressing from the public service to become a Member of Parliament, Cabinet Minister and, ultimately, Vice-President.

He paid particular tribute to Dr Scott's leadership following the death of President Michael Sata in 2014, describing it as one of the most testing moments in Zambia's democratic history.

The President said the country was confronted with political uncertainty and intense succession disputes, but Dr Scott remained resolute in upholding the Constitution, safeguarding national stability and ensuring a peaceful transfer of power.

President Hichilema extended his heartfelt condolences to Dr Scott's widow, Mrs Charlotte Scott, and the entire bereaved family, saying the nation stood with them in mourning a patriot whose life was characterised by dedicated service, courage and an unwavering commitment to Zambia.
