Government Unveils National Tobacco Strategy to Strengthen the Sector
The Government has introduced a National Tobacco Strategy designed to promote the long-term growth of Zambia's tobacco industry while improving the livelihoods of more than 500,000 households that rely on tobacco farming.
Speaking at the official launch, Ministry of Agriculture Permanent Secretary John Mulongoti described the tobacco industry as an important pillar of the national economy, providing income for thousands of farming families and making a significant contribution to economic development.
Mr Mulongoti acknowledged that the sector continues to face a number of challenges, particularly declining tobacco prices, which have placed increasing pressure on farmers in the country's major tobacco-producing regions.
He said the newly launched strategy will provide a framework for the sustainable development of the tobacco subsector, ensuring it remains competitive and resilient. He added that although Zambia has recorded notable progress in tobacco production over the years, there is considerable potential to further expand the industry.
Meanwhile, Tobacco Board of Zambia Chief Operations Officer Tyndale Kasongole revealed that national tobacco production has risen sharply, increasing from 23 million kilogrammes to 72 million kilogrammes in recent years.
Mr Kasongole said the National Tobacco Strategy outlines a clear path for the continued growth of the tobacco subsector and reflects the Government's commitment to boosting production, enhancing competitiveness and creating greater opportunities for farmers and other stakeholders across the value chain.
