More Women, Youth Headed To Parliament, Says HH
President Hakainde Hichilema has said his decision to sign Bill 7 into law was driven by a determination to widen representation in the National Assembly, opening the door for more women, young people and other underrepresented groups.
Speaking to thousands of residents in Shiwang'andu District, Muchinga Province, the President said the legislation would translate into a visibly different Parliament after the 13th August general election, with women and youths taking up seats in greater numbers than before.
He urged women and young people in particular to back the UPND at the polls, framing the party as the vehicle through which their representation has been secured.
The President also turned to the mining sector, saying Government would press ahead with efforts to improve safety for small-scale miners by creating a safer operating environment for those working in the industry.
On public services, he said Government intends to recruit more teachers and nurses once the elections are concluded, continuing the recruitment drive that has characterised the UPND's term.
President Hichilema cautioned Zambians against returning the opposition to office, saying the UPND remains focused on delivering development rather than politicking.
He closed by calling on supporters at the rally to campaign actively for him and for all UPND candidates ahead of polling day.
