Government Flags Off Distribution of 119 Ambulances

The government has flagged off the distribution of 119 Constituency Development Fund (CDF) ambulances to enhance healthcare delivery across the country.

President Hakainde Hichilema emphasised that the initiative demonstrates the government's unwavering commitment to addressing community health challenges through the devolution process. The ambulances are equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment, enabling healthcare personnel to perform primary medical procedures during patient transport.

Speaking through Local Government Minister Gift Sialubalo during Wednesday's ceremony in Lusaka, President Hichilema tasked local authorities with ensuring proper utilisation and timely servicing of the ambulances. He directed the Ministry of Health to provide capacity building in basic life support services, including emergency and first-aid response, for all personnel operating the ambulances.

"This procurement shows our commitment as a government to resolving issues affecting our communities," President Hichilema stated, adding that the initiative reflects government's understanding of finance's importance in the devolution process.

Health Minister Dr Elijah Muchima noted that the ambulances will significantly reduce challenges faced by healthcare workers in rural areas, ensuring equitable service delivery across all health facilities. He praised the cost-effective procurement, with each ambulance costing $79,000 compared to previous purchases of $250,000.

Local Government Permanent Secretary for Technical Services Nicholas Phiri highlighted that most Zambians are witnessing the transformative impact of CDF on their lives. The distribution represents a significant milestone in strengthening primary healthcare at the constituency level while supporting the government's decentralisation policy objectives.
