President Hichilema to Preside Over State Funeral for Former President
Government and family reach agreement on ceremonies for sixth president after negotiations in South Africa
President Hakainde Hichilema will preside over the state funeral of former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu, following negotiations between government officials and the deceased leader's family in South Africa.
The announcement came after a high-level delegation led by former Vice President Inonge Wina travelled to South Africa to discuss funeral arrangements with Mr Lungu's relatives.
Secretary to the Cabinet Patrick Kangwa confirmed the agreement during a joint press briefing in South Africa alongside family representative MK Bizulu.
"In accordance with the family's wishes and the dignity befitting the service of the sixth president to our nation, a state funeral shall be held and shall be presided over by the President of the Republic of Zambia," Mr Kangwa said.
The funeral ceremony is scheduled for 22 June at the Mulungushi Conference Centre in Lusaka, with President Hichilema extending the national mourning period by nine days until 23 June.
The state funeral arrangements demonstrate the government's commitment to honouring former leaders.
