Government Praised for Dignified Handling of Former President Lungu's Funeral

Lusaka residents and religious leaders have commended the government's respectful approach to funeral arrangements for the late sixth president

The government has been praised for its mature and compassionate handling of funeral arrangements for former President Edgar Lungu, with both the state and the deceased leader's family reaching an amicable agreement on Sunday.

The consensus has been welcomed by Lusaka residents, who have called for continued peace and unity during the period of national mourning for the nation’s sixth republican president.

Bishop David Masupa, President of the Independent Churches of Zambia (ICOZ), particularly commended the New Dawn administration's approach, describing it as demonstrating "maturity, empathy, and respect" towards both the Lungu family and the Zambian people.

"The State has exhibited love for their citizens, and especially love for the family — which culminates into maturity and caring for the desires of the citizens of Zambia to mourn their former Head of State," Bishop Masupa said in an interview.

Former President Lungu's death has prompted widespread grief and reflection across the nation. The government has declared a period of national mourning and is working closely with the Lungu family to ensure an honourable funeral programme.

The late president's remains are scheduled to arrive in the country on Wednesday, 18 June, with burial expected to take place on Monday, 23 June.
