UPND seeks SADC help on Mwamba Extradition

The United Party for National Development (UPND) has approached the Southern African Development Community (SADC) for assistance in bringing back former diplomat Emmanuel Mwamba to face legal proceedings in Zambia.

Mr Mwamba, who previously served in Zambia's diplomatic service, is currently outside the country and wanted by authorities.

The government maintains that Mr Mwamba should return to answer to the law and has sought regional cooperation to facilitate this process.

In a separate move, the UPND has also written to the United States Embassy in Lusaka. The letter argues that Mr Mwamba should not be considered a genuine asylum seeker, but rather someone avoiding legal accountability.

Mr Mwamba has not yet commented publicly on the government's latest moves.

SADC, the 16-member regional bloc, has mechanisms for cooperation on legal matters between member states, though it remains unclear what specific steps the organisation might take in this case.
