Government Condemns Attack on Opposition Secretariat, Pledges Equal Justice

Chief Government Spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa has condemned the attack on the Patriotic Front (PF) Secretariat in Lusaka by suspected unruly youths, urging the police to investigate the matter thoroughly and bring those responsible to justice.

Addressing the media, Mr. Mweetwa distanced the United Party for National Development (UPND) and its youth members from the incident, stressing that the ruling party remains committed to peace and lawful political engagement. He reiterated the government’s position against political violence, stating:

“Under the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema, there shall be no return to the era of caderism. Any statement from any party structure suggesting otherwise is null and void. The UPND detests political violence, and President Hichilema, as Commander-in-Chief, is determined to ensure Zambia remains a peaceful nation.”

He further emphasised that “there shall be no sacred cows for anyone found breaking the law,” underscoring that the law will be applied equally regardless of political affiliation.

Commenting on recent disturbances in Chingola, Mr. Mweetwa condemned the violence and said: “Despite such unfortunate incidents, the people of Zambia remain aware of the many achievements recorded under President Hichilema’s administration in the past four years.”

Mr. Mweetwa also urged the police to be proactive in preventing unlawful gatherings and reaffirmed that the restoration of the rule of law is a key priority for the government. He reiterated that internal disputes within the PF are for the party itself to resolve and encouraged citizens to take part in the ongoing voter registration exercise ahead of the 2026 general elections.
