US and Zambia Move Toward $1.5 Billion Health Sector Agreement

The United States and Zambia have begun negotiations to finalise a $1.5 billion agreement supporting Zambia's health sector.

A high-level US Government delegation met with senior Zambian Government officials in Lusaka yesterday to discuss the partnership.

Health Minister Elijah Muchima confirmed the assistance will be delivered through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) set to run for five years beginning in April 2026. The agreement will target human resources, medical commodities, and broader health system strengthening.

The cooperation framework also aims to build on progress made in combating HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis.

US Ambassador to Zambia Michael Gonzales emphasised that the support will strengthen laboratory and data systems, expand workforce capacity, and enhance medical interventions. He noted the partnership is designed to ensure long-term sustainability in delivering quality healthcare to Zambians.

US State Department Senior Health Adviser Brad Smith underscored America's commitment to the partnership's success.
