Lunsemfwa’s 27MW Solar Boost

Lunsemfwa Hydro Power Company has boosted the national grid with a newly commissioned 27MW solar plant.

President Hakainde Hichilema said more than 800 megawatts of electricity has so far been generated from various solar projects across the country, contributing to the 1,476 megawatts of power added to the national grid since the UPND came into office.

Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet Siazongo Siakalenge, who represented President Hichilema at the commissioning ceremony in Kapiri Mposhi, said the Lunsemfwa solar project was a significant step towards strengthening power generation and expanding renewable energy capacity.

President Hichilema described the project as an important milestone in diversifying the energy mix, saying its benefits extend beyond electricity generation.

He said investments such as Lunsemfwa’s solar plant would also support skills development through the training of engineers and technicians, while creating opportunities for further growth in the energy sector.

The President assured investors that government would continue providing a conducive environment to attract more investment into the sector.

Meanwhile, Energy Permanent Secretary Arnold Simwaba has dismissed concerns that the country could experience increased load shedding after the general elections.

Mr Simwaba said government had made substantial investments in the energy sector aimed at improving electricity supply and strengthening national power security.

Lunsemfwa Hydro Power Company Deputy Board Chairman Tarcisio Chanda said the project demonstrated confidence in the country as a destination for long-term infrastructure investment.

Mr Chanda said the investment aligned with efforts to expand electricity generation, increase renewable energy capacity and encourage private sector participation.

Lunsemfwa Chief Executive Officer Alpha Mwale said the solar plant was unique as it was developed without a traditional Power Purchase Agreement.

He said the project was the first of its kind to combine solar power generation with hydropower regulation, creating a new model for renewable energy development.
