ZAMRA Moves to Secure US$1bn Beef Export Goal
The Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority (ZAMRA) says stronger regulation of veterinary medicines will be critical if Zambia is to achieve its target of earning US$1 billion from beef exports.
ZAMRA Director-General Makomani Siyanga says improving animal health is essential not only for food security but also for the growth and competitiveness of the livestock sector.
Speaking in Lusaka today during the launch of the Animal Health Systems Strengthening Project, Mr Siyanga said that while progress had been made in the livestock industry, the regulation of veterinary medicines had not advanced at the same pace.
He said weaknesses in the regulatory framework had created opportunities for counterfeit and substandard veterinary medicines to enter the market, posing risks to animal health and the wider livestock industry.
Mr Siyanga said ZAMRA is now working closely with the Department of Veterinary Services to strengthen regulatory oversight and improve the control of veterinary medicines.
He said the partnership is expected to support efforts to safeguard animal health, improve the quality of livestock products and strengthen Zambia’s prospects of expanding its beef exports.
