Rising Cases of Diabetes Recorded
The Ministry of Health has said that there are rising cases of diabetes being recorded across all age groups. The ministry have urged the public to implement healthier lifestyles and have more frequent health checks.
Speaking to ZNBC News, Ministry of Health NCDs Manager Dr. Brian Mwachisowa said diabetes, particularly type 2, is on the rise among both adults and young people attending health facilities.
He attributed the growing burden to unhealthy diets, excessive consumption of sugary and processed foods, overweight and obesity, and physical inactivity.
Dr. Mwachisowa urged the public to eat healthily, exercise regularly and make use of screening services at health facilities, saying early detection allows treatment to begin before the condition damages vital organs.
He said the Ministry is scaling up health promotion, screening and early diagnosis, while strengthening access to essential diabetes medicines and supplies.
And Nutritionist Bright Chibala said improving dietary choices is critical in reducing the risk of diabetes, urging the public to prioritise nutritious, less processed foods.
