Former Lunte MP Mutotwe Kafwaya Confirmed Dead After Security Operation
Former Lunte Member of Parliament Mutotwe Kafwaya has been confirmed dead following a joint security operation in Kabulonga, Lusaka, on 14 August 2026.
Inspector General of Police Graphel Musamba said a Joint Task Force team from the Central Joint Operations Committee (CJOC), including the Drug Enforcement Commission, carried out the intelligence-led operation at a named premises at around 19:30 hours that evening. The operation, he said, followed intelligence gathered after the recovery of K7.3 million during the second Task Force operation in Lusaka, and concerned individuals of national interest suspected of posing a threat to national security whose activities had been monitored since November 2023.
According to Mr Musamba, the team was met with gunfire and resistance on arrival, prompting officers to return fire. One man was fatally wounded and a firearm recovered. He was rushed to hospital but pronounced dead on arrival. Following social media reports of a missing person, family members were called in and positively identified the deceased as Mr Kafwaya.
The confirmation follows the earlier announcement that 11 people had been apprehended at the premises. Among them, Mr Musamba said, were three ex-commandos with roughly two decades of special forces experience, trained as snipers and in marksmanship and hijacking, alongside two retired police officers.
The case forms part of a wider security investigation into individuals with foreign military training. Earlier this month, three Zambian nationals were intercepted at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport on their return from security related training in Russia.
The CJOC stressed the operation was conducted in the interest of national security, not to target anyone by political affiliation, occupation or status, and said all suspects would be accorded their constitutional rights. Members of the public were urged to remain calm and avoid circulating unverified information as investigations continue.
