ZESCO on Track to Surpass 1,000MW Solar Energy Target
ZESCO Limited says it is on course not only to meet but exceed the Presidential directive to generate 1,000 megawatts of solar energy nationwide by the end of 2026.
Speaking after touring the US$78 million Chipata West Solar Project in Eastern Province, ZESCO Director of Planning and Projects Francis Namakanda said the power utility has already delivered more than 700 megawatts of solar capacity through various projects across the country.
Mr Namakanda noted that several additional solar developments are expected to come online in the coming months, placing ZESCO in a strong position to surpass the 1,000MW target before 31 December.
Meanwhile, ZESCO Chief Operations Officer Fitzpatrick Kapepe revealed that construction of the Chipata West Solar Project is approximately 52% complete.
Mr Kapepe said the project, which is being undertaken in partnership with China Machinery Engineering Corporation, is scheduled for completion in November this year.
He added that the development has so far created employment for more than 100 local residents working on the construction site.
