K740 Million Mansa Airport Upgrade Gathers Pace

The Mansa Airport upgrade project, valued at over K740 million, is advancing steadily, with groundwork for the new runway now complete.

Luapula Province Permanent Secretary Prudence Chinama confirmed that the first phase of the development, which includes a four-kilometre runway and a dedicated fire station, is progressing well. She said all major physical structures at the airport are expected to be finished by December this year.

According to Ms Chinama, the modernisation of the facility will significantly improve accessibility to Luapula Province, opening the door to greater investment and a boost in tourism. She explained that the upgraded airport will allow the region to welcome larger aircraft, something the current infrastructure cannot accommodate.

The Permanent Secretary noted that Luapula is home to numerous tourism sites that remain underutilised, largely because of limited transport links. By enhancing air access, the province hopes to unlock the full potential of these attractions and draw more visitors from both within Zambia and abroad.

The project forms part of broader efforts to strengthen infrastructure across the province and stimulate economic growth. Once complete, the airport is expected to serve as a key gateway, connecting Luapula to major centres and supporting trade, business travel, and tourism alike.
