Zambia Publishes Names of 3,205 Newly Recruited Health Workers

The Zambian government has released the names of 3,205 health workers drawn from the 2023 recruitment database, marking one of the largest single intakes into the public health system in recent years.

Those recruited span a wide range of professional categories, including 240 medical doctors, 997 nurses, 194 registered midwifery nurses, 390 clinical officers and 138 environmental health staff, alongside dental personnel, community health workers and general support staff.

The full list was published in the Zambia Daily Mail and Times of Zambia following a brief delay after Ministry of Information Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana announced on Thursday that both publications had experienced a technical fault, pushing the release to Monday. Once published, demand surged rapidly - copies had sold out across Lusaka's Central Business District by 10am as members of the public rushed to check whether their names appeared.

Civil Service Commission Chairperson Dr Choolwe Beyani welcomed the announcement, describing the recruitment drive as a demonstration of government's strong commitment to the health sector.

The intake addresses longstanding workforce shortages across multiple tiers of the health system.
