Lumezi Nutrition Initiative Set to Reach 7,500 Children and Expectant Mothers

A government-led nutrition programme, delivered in collaboration with Save the Children and The Hunger Project, is poised to support more than 7,500 vulnerable residents in Lumezi District, Eastern Province. The initiative will provide assistance to 6,000 children under the age of five and 1,500 pregnant women across the district.

At the official launch in Eastern Zambia, Deputy Permanent Secretary Lewis Mwape called on partners to enhance and transform the existing school feeding programme currently being rolled out by the government. He emphasised that the project would drive progress in both the health and education sectors.

Save the Children Country Director Chilobe Kambikambi revealed that the programme is backed by funding exceeding one million US dollars from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She noted that the initiative directly aligns with Zambia's Health National Strategic Plan (2022–2026), aiming to bolster health infrastructure and improve service delivery while raising standards in maternal and child health facilities.

The Hunger Project Country Director Samuel Mtambo highlighted his organisation's significant presence in the region, noting investments totalling more than 85 million Kwacha across Eastern Province. These contributions have supported the development of the Vubwi epicentre, the Chipangali nutrition programme, and maternal and child health projects in Kasenengwa District.
