Mufulira Wanderers Football Club has confirmed that armed robbers stole K181,000 in gate takings following the club's Week 20 fixture against Nchanga Rangers at Shinde Stadium on Sunday, 16th February 2026.
The incident took place at approximately 18:00 hours at the club's secretariat, where armed assailants held staff members at gunpoint before making off with the cash. The robbers also hijacked a Toyota Harrier, registration number AIF 4314, belonging to Logistics Manager Patrick Mwanza. The vehicle had been designated to transport the funds to Mopani Security for safekeeping. Gunshots were reportedly fired to disperse bystanders as the suspects fled the scene.
Police were promptly notified and launched a manhunt. While the hijacked vehicle was later recovered after being abandoned by the suspects, the stolen cash remains unaccounted for. The Zambia Police Service has confirmed that investigations are ongoing and efforts to apprehend the culprits continue.
In a statement issued by Club President George Katongo, Mufulira Wanderers expressed deep regret over the incident and reassured sponsors, supporters, and all stakeholders that the club is fully cooperating with law enforcement. Katongo added that the club is reviewing its security protocols and implementing stronger measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
