ZICTA Puts Social Media Abusers on Notice as Cyber Security Act Takes Effect
The Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) has issued a stern warning to individuals misusing social media, cautioning that the law will catch up with them.
ZICTA Director General Collins Mbulo expressed deep concern over the growing abuse of social media and artificial intelligence to spread disinformation and disturbing content. Speaking after paying a courtesy call on Copperbelt Province Minister Elisha Matambo in Ndola, Mr Mbulo confirmed that the newly enacted Cyber Security Act of 2025 will be strictly enforced, with offenders held fully accountable for their actions online.
On the issue of connectivity, ZICTA acknowledged persistent network challenges across the country, even as electricity supply has improved. Mr Mbulo said the authority is actively engaging all four mobile network operators to enhance service delivery and ensure reliable connectivity for users nationwide.
Copperbelt Province Minister Elisha Matambo highlighted the severity of the problem in parts of his province, noting that areas including Mpongwe, Lufwanyama, Masaiti, and Kafulafuta continue to experience poor network coverage, leaving residents unable to access essential services.
Minister Matambo called on ZICTA to hold service providers to account and ensure that consumers receive value for money. He also voiced strong support for decisive action against individuals who abuse social media platforms, particularly those directing insults at national leaders.
The warnings come amid a broader government push to promote responsible use of digital platforms while expanding access to reliable telecommunications infrastructure across Zambia.
