Ground-Breaking $90M Solar Project Launched in Chirundu

The government has officially broken ground on a transformative 100-megawatt solar power project in the Katobola area of Chirundu District, marking a major milestone for Zambia’s renewable energy ambitions. The $90 million development is a joint venture between ZESCO and JIGSCO Energy Corporation, signalling continued confidence in the country’s clean-energy potential.

Speaking at the ceremony, Energy Minister Makozo Chikote described the project as a pivotal investment that will bolster national energy security while stimulating wider economic growth. He noted that expanding renewable capacity is essential to ensuring stable, sustainable power for households, businesses, and industry.

ZESCO Managing Director Justin Longo added that the utility has secured additional land for similar solar installations across the country, laying the groundwork for a broader rollout of green infrastructure. This aligns with the government’s long-term strategy to diversify energy sources and reduce reliance on hydropower.

Local leadership also voiced hopes for inclusive development. Headman Katobola urged the project’s contractors to prioritise employing people from surrounding communities, emphasising that local participation will help ensure lasting social and economic benefits.

The project is expected to accelerate Chirundu’s development while advancing Zambia’s transition to cleaner, more resilient energy.
