Government Boosts Teacher Numbers With Major Recruitment Drive

The Zambian government has taken decisive action to strengthen the country's education sector by authorising the Treasury to fund the recruitment of 2,000 new teachers for 2025, with an additional 3,500 positions planned for 2026.

The ambitious recruitment initiative, which will see a total of 5,500 teachers joining the profession over the next two years, represents a significant investment in addressing staffing gaps across the country's schools and improving the quality of education for Zambian children.

Teaching Service Commission (TSC) Chairperson Daphne Chimuka confirmed the development on Wednesday, noting that the commission is awaiting ministerial approval before making a formal announcement.

The recruitment drive is expected to move forward quickly, with advertisements for teaching positions anticipated to be released soon. Ministry of Education Permanent Secretary Kelvin Mambwe indicated in an earlier interview that the teaching service would publish the recruitment advertisement "within the course of this month or early next month."

"For the teaching service, the advertisement should come out within the course of this month or early next month. The idea is that we are going to recruit the 2,000 for 2025 and 3,500 for 2026, so in total we are recruiting 5,500 teachers," Mambwe explained.

The government's proactive approach to teacher recruitment demonstrates its commitment to ensuring adequate staffing levels in schools nationwide.
