Fresh Poll Ordered in Mandevu

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) will hold a fresh parliamentary election in Mandevu Constituency after an attack destroyed election materials before results could be declared, Chief Electoral Officer Brown Kasaro has announced.

Mr Kasaro said the decision followed a security incident during the aggregation of National Assembly results from the August 13 general elections. According to a report submitted by the Lusaka District Electoral Officer on August 18, unknown individuals stormed the totalling centre in Mandevu, destroyed the results transmission kits and made off with all the accompanying documentation.

The attack left the returning officer with no means of verifying or declaring the outcome of the parliamentary vote for the constituency, effectively halting the process.

"The Commission received an official report from the Lusaka District Electoral Officer, dated August 18, 2026, indicating that unknown individuals attacked the totalling centre in Mandevu Constituency, destroyed the results transmission kits and fled with all the documentation, thereby rendering the returning officer incapable of declaring the results of the National Assembly election," Mr Kasaro said.

As a result, the Commission has resolved to conduct a fresh election in the constituency to allow voters the opportunity to elect their Member of Parliament through a credible and complete process.

Mr Kasaro said a date for the by-election would be announced in due course, adding that the Commission remained committed to safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process and ensuring every constituency is properly represented in the National Assembly.
