President Hakainde Hichilema will launch the United Party for National Development’s manifesto tomorrow, Thursday 11 June, for the 2026 upcoming general elections in August. Taking place at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre in Lusaka. His plans include improving employment, cost of living, the economy, and electricity capacity.
The manifesto will reflect on progress made since 2021 in “restoring free education, repairing the economy and putting Zambia back on a stable footing.” Mr. Clayson Hamasaka Chief Communication Specialist has said “the groundwork is now done, and the country is ready to accelerate national development.” He added that “tomorrow’s manifesto is built on a record of love, care and delivery Zambians can already see and feel.”
The manifesto rests on the principle of stability, having brought inflation down from 24.6% to 6.6% the government marked significant progress in stabilising the economy.
Additionally, government focus has turned to free education, which has recently been signed into law by President Hichilema. Evidently, more than 2.6 million children have returned to classrooms supported by the recruitment of over 42,000 teachers.
Clayson Hamasaka said that “the Farmer Input Support Programme has been reformed and put fully onto an electronic voucher system across every district, cutting out ghost beneficiaries, bringing more than 200,000 genuine new farmers into the programme.” Reforms made by the government have helped deliver a projected 4,937,000 tonne bumper maize crop.
The Constituency Development Fund has notably grown under the UPND, Mr. Hamasaka reports that in 2021 each constituency received K1.6 million, now in 2026 the figure has risen to K40 million. The projects through the CDF have allowed “communities to decide their own priorities, from classrooms and clinics to bridges, bursaries and local enterprise.”
In tomorrow’s manifesto, the President will outline aims to create more jobs, tackle the cost of living and deliver a rapidly growing economy, Mr. Hamasaka reveals. Furthermore, the President has plans to triple “electricity generation capacity to 10,000 megawatts, lifting copper production towards three million tonnes a year, and growing maize harvests to ten million tonnes to feed the nation and the region.”
