ZESCO Implements 10-Hour Power Supply in High-Density Townships

ZESCO Limited has started implementing a 10-hour power supply schedule in 21 highly populated townships to ease the burden of load shedding.

Some of the townships benefitting from the initiative include Wusakile, Kankoyo, Chibolya, Kanyama, Chawama, Chipata, Linda, Mtendere, Mandevu, Zambia and Chipulukusu, among others. The power supply is being rolled out in phases, with more areas expected to be added as additional sources of power are secured.

Minister of Energy Makozo Chikote said high-density townships have been prioritised and are being given power for at least 10 hours each day. He explained that the move is aimed at supporting the economic survival of communities whose livelihoods depend on electricity.

“The implementation of this measure is in a phased approach with increased numbers being added as power sources are secured,” Mr Chikote said.

Government says the measure will help ease the impact of load shedding on households and small businesses while long-term solutions to the country’s power challenges are being pursued.
