50MW Solar Plant Nears Completion in Mumbwa
Construction of a significant 50-megawatt solar power plant in Mumbwa is approaching completion, marking a major milestone in Zambia's renewable energy development. The project, spearheaded by Chinese firm SinoMine Resource Group Company Limited, represents a substantial investment in the country's clean energy infrastructure.
During a recent meeting in Beijing, SinoMine Group Chairperson Wang Pingwei made an appeal to ZESCO to accelerate the connection process that will integrate the solar facility into Zambia's national power grid. This grid connection represents the final crucial step before the plant can begin contributing clean electricity to the national supply.
The meeting, which took place during a courtesy visit by Mumbwa Member of Parliament and Southern Province Minister Credo Nanjuwa, also explored broader economic development opportunities. Minister Nanjuwa proposed establishing a Multi-Facility Economic Zone in Mumbwa, a strategic initiative designed to enhance the district's economic prospects and attract additional investment.
Zambia's Ambassador to China, Ivan Zyuulu, praised SinoMine's ongoing contributions to the country's development, particularly highlighting the company's Kitumba Copper Mine in Mumbwa, which has generated significant employment opportunities for local Zambians.
Once operational, the 50MW solar plant will strengthen Zambia's energy security while supporting the nation's commitment to sustainable development and reducing carbon emissions.
