ZRA Seizes Smuggled Alcohol Worth Over K780,000 in Fish Bags

The Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) has successfully intercepted a smuggling operation involving alcohol concealed within bags of fish, with an estimated revenue loss of over K780,000.

The seizure occurred on Saturday, September 20, along the Mongu-Senanga road when ZRA officials spotted a suspicious truck heading toward Lusaka. Upon noticing the ZRA vehicle, the driver attempted to resist inspection, raising immediate alarm for the enforcement team.

An examination revealed that the truck's cargo consisted of smuggled alcoholic beverages hidden within fish bags, with no accompanying customs documentation. This confirmed the operation as outright smuggling, with an estimated revenue loss of over K780,000.

ZRA Corporate Communications Manager Oliver Nzala emphasized that this interception forms part of the authority's broader initiatives to protect society from harmful products while ensuring fair competition in the domestic market.

“This is part of ZRA initiatives geared towards promoting legitimate trade, mobilising revenue and protecting the society from proliferation of harmful products and promoting fair competition in the local economy. Taxpayers are encouraged to remain compliant with tax laws in order to avoid punitive enforcement measures including prosecution,” stated Nzala.

The authority continues urging taxpayers to maintain compliance with tax laws to avoid punitive enforcement measures, including potential prosecution for violations.
