Government Engaging with Carmakers to Attract Investment
The government is in discussions with carmakers to attract investment of manufacturers of electric vehicle (EV) component manufacturers into the country.
It is hoped that the talks will encourage EV manufacturers to invest in building manufacturing plants in the copperbelt to utilise the country’s expansive copper resources to help develop electric vehicle engines.
“We have been talking, even last week when I was in Germany, telling these companies to please consider the manufacture of some of your electric-vehicle components in Zambia,” Finance Minister Situmbeko Musokotwane said.
Such talks are not the government’s first success with regards to electric vehicle investment. Last year, the world’s largest electric manufacturer, Build Your Dreams expanded into the country through a partnership with Pilatus Electric Mobility Zambia Limited (PEM). The move signals growing investor interest in our role in the global EV supply chain.
