Zambia Secures $900m Energy Deal as Government Strategy Delivers Results
Tanzania's AMSONS Group has partnered with Zambia's Exergy Africa Limited to develop 1,300MW of power projects worth $900 million, marking a major vote of confidence in government's energy sector reforms.
The ambitious initiative will deliver 1,000MW of solar and 300MW of coal generation, directly supporting Zambia's drive toward energy security and industrial expansion.
Energy Minister Makozo Chikote hailed the partnership as proof that "Zambia's energy sector is on the right trajectory" under government's leadership.
"We welcome these credible private sector investments, which evidence the government's solid multi-source strategy for the sector, where public and private participation thrives to bring solutions and grow the sector," Minister Chikote declared at Tuesday's signing ceremony.
The Minister revealed impressive timelines: "This partnership will result in 500MW of new solar capacity added to the grid in 18 months. In 24 months, the full 1,000MW of clean solar will have been installed, effectively moving Zambia into surplus power generation status."
AMSONS Group CEO Edha Nahdi described Zambia as "a strategic growth market," praising government's investment climate. "We are bringing our regional energy infrastructure and clean energy investments to support Zambia's development, industrialisation and power stability," Nahdi said.
Exergy Africa Director Monica Musonda emphasized the partnership's impact: "This represents a major commitment to Zambia's power sector and industrial future, delivering reliable power where it is needed most."
The deal promises expanded generation capacity, improved grid reliability, and significant job creation—demonstrating how government's strategic vision is attracting serious international investment to transform Zambia's energy landscape.
