Haaland Settles Derby For Ten-Man City As Arsenal Keep Perfect Record
Manchester City won the first derby of the season with ten men, beating United 1-0 at Old Trafford to cap a weekend in which the top of the table pulled clear and the bottom of it looked increasingly stranded.
Phil Foden was sent off on 23 minutes for kicking out at Bruno Fernandes, and City spent more than an hour a man down. It did not matter. Erling Haaland turned in a deflected Josko Gvardiol cross just after the hour, a goal ruled out for offside and then restored by VAR, to the visible fury of a United bench who argued a City player had been interfering from an offside position. Haaland touched the ball twice in the penalty area all afternoon and scored with one of them. United managed two shots on target after the red card.
Arsenal stayed perfect, winning 2-0 at Sunderland through Bruno Guimarães and a Saka penalty deep into stoppage time. Liverpool were held goalless at home by Fulham, who took their first point of the season, and Tottenham drew a blank against Everton.
Chelsea's afternoon was worse. Twice pegged back by Hull City, they drew 2-2 and now sit below the promoted side. Nottingham Forest won 2-1 at Aston Villa, and Ipswich took a 3-2 win at Selhurst Park with a ninetieth-minute Zian Flemming goal. Bournemouth and Brentford shared four.
Coventry remain the story nobody at the club wants. Beaten 5-0 at home by Brighton, reduced to ten when Taiwo Awoniyi was dismissed on 53 minutes, Frank Lampard's side are bottom with no points and no goals.
