Only Morocco and Egypt Remain to Represent Africa at the World Cup
Despite nine out of ten African teams progressing into the knockout stages last week, only Morocco and Egypt remain on the world stage to represent African football. Whilst the other nations are on their way home, they have not left quietly.
Cape Verde played the current holders of the trophy on Friday night in what has been labelled as one of the greatest World Cup matches of all time. Despite losing in extra time – having drawn 2-2 after 90 minutes – an array of spectacular goals and acrobatic saves from both sides made the game incredibly entertaining. Whilst Cape Verde have packed their bags, they will be remembered for their incredible 'underdog' performance against the holders.
Friday night football also saw two of Africa's footballing giants take to the world stage. Algeria were defeated by Switzerland two goals to nil, whilst Egypt's expert penalty takers enabled them to defeat Australia in a penalty shootout. Egypt now face a formidable Argentinian side on Tuesday, but Cape Verde's performance against them a few days ago should give them hope.
Ghana took on a strong Colombian side on Saturday evening. Despite having an array of quality players on the pitch – led by Manchester City's Antoine Semenyo – the West African nation fell short and lost by a goal to nil.
Morocco is the highest-ranked African FIFA nation. They took on Canada on Saturday evening and comprehensively beat the host nation three goals to nil. However, they will be extremely worried by the sight of Ismael Saibari's injury. The talented attacker pulled up with a muscle injury after 22 minutes. Morocco faces a strong French side in the next round and will give the favourites a serious battle on the pitch.
