Copper Queens kick off WAFCON campaign against Egypt
The wait is over. The Copper Queens launch their 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign today when they face Egypt in their Group C opener at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat.
Kick-off is at 19:00, with the Copper Queens aiming for a strong start after completing their final preparations in Algeria before arriving in Morocco.
Head coach Nora Häuptle says her squad is fit, focused and ready for the challenge.
“We can’t wait to start the tournament. Our players in camp are fit and ready,” said Häuptle.
The Swiss coach expects a competitive encounter but insists The Copper Queens will not underestimate their opponents.
“Egypt is a footballing nation. We can’t underrate them, but we are focusing on ourselves.”
Captain Barbra Banda says excitement is high in camp as the team prepares to take the first step towards another successful WAFCON campaign.
“The mood is very high in camp. The girls are excited to start and we can’t wait for the game.”
FAZ General Secretary Charles Chakatazya has urged the players to embrace the responsibility of representing Zambia and remain united throughout the tournament.
