Fifa Launches Disciplinary Inquiry Into Argentina After World Cup Final Clashes

Fifa has confirmed it has opened disciplinary proceedings following the disorder involving Argentina after the World Cup final.

The governing body's disciplinary committee has appointed an independent disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to examine the incidents that took place after the final whistle at MetLife Stadium. The investigation will determine whether any players, coaches or officials breached Fifa regulations.

Individuals found to have been involved in the confrontations could face suspensions, while the Argentine Football Association (AFA) is also at risk of financial sanctions.

The fight broke out after Argentina's 1-0 defeat to Spain on Sunday, when members of the Argentine squad and coaching staff became involved in a series of clashes with Spain players during the post-match celebrations.

Defender Nahuel Molina, midfielder Leandro Paredes, forward Thiago Almada and assistant coach Roberto Ayala were all seen taking part in the altercations.

There was initial confusion over Leandro Paredes' disciplinary record after Fifa's commentator information system incorrectly indicated he had been sent off by referee Slavko Vinčić for allegedly grabbing Spain defender Eric García by the throat. The red card was later removed from the system, and Fifa subsequently confirmed to BBC Sport that no dismissal or disciplinary action had been issued against the midfielder during the match.

Argentina had already finished the game with 10 men after Enzo Fernández was shown a second yellow card deep into second-half stoppage time.

Separately, Fifa had already begun considering disciplinary action against the AFA after Argentina's players displayed a banner backing the country's claim to the Falkland Islands following their 2-1 semi-final victory over England.
