DR Congo 2-0 Zambia - Open Goal Match Report
August 7th 2025
Africa Cup of Nations - Match Day 2
DR Congo bounced back emphatically in their TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) Group A clash, defeating Zambia 2‑0 at Nairobi’s Nyayo National Stadium. After a tense, goalless first half, the Leopards found their rhythm early in the second when Jephte Kitambala teed up Ibrahim Matobo for a powerful effort in the 51st minute.
Chipolopolo entered the match fresh and optimistic under coach Avram Grant, but their attacking play lacked clinical sharpness. Despite holding shape well in the first half, they failed to create real danger in the final third for most of the match, with DR Congo’s defence proving sturdy.
DR Congo all but secured the win in the 71st minute when substitute Horso Mwaku capitalised on a swift counterattack led by Oscar Kabwit, who finished well to double their lead.
The result marked DR Congo’s return to winning form in CHAN, ending a five-match winless run and handing Zambia its first-ever CHAN group-stage defeat.
DR Congo now sits firmly back in contention, while Zambia must regroup quickly. Both teams will be back in action on Sunday, with DR Congo facing South Sudan and Chipolopolo taking on hosts Kenya in what could be a decisive Group A encounter. Chipolopolo are hoping to better their best-ever finish — third place in 2009.
