Chipolopolo Exit CHAN Early Despite Positive Signs, Says Avram Grant
Zambia’s 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) journey came to a premature end after the Chipolopolo suffered a string of defeats in the group stage. Losses to DR Congo, Angola, Morocco, and Kenya meant Zambia bowed out without a win, prompting disappointment among fans and questions about the team’s preparedness.
Despite the results, head coach Avram Grant maintained a constructive outlook, highlighting the developmental purpose of the CHAN tournament. Speaking after the narrow 1–0 defeat to Kenya on August 17, 2025, Grant said, “We showed improvement today, especially defensively. In the other matches, we were even poorer.” He acknowledged the performance gaps but also pointed out the growth areas he observed.
Grant emphasised that CHAN is designed for showcasing local talent, and not necessarily a reflection of Zambia’s full potential. “This tournament is basically for testing and exposing players in the local leagues. We have FIFA windows coming up next, and that’s where our focus will be, with all the players playing in the abroad leagues available for selection,” he added.
While the early exit was disappointing, Grant’s focus on long-term team development and player evaluation may prove vital ahead of upcoming international fixtures. With more experienced players joining the squad soon, fans remain hopeful for a stronger showing in future competitions.
