NAPSA Implements New Pension Reforms

More than 17,800 pensioners across Zambia are receiving higher monthly pensions following the implementation of reforms under the National Pension Scheme Act Number 72 of 2026.

The National Pension Scheme Authority (NAPSA) says the minimum monthly pension has increased from K1,861 to K2,327, with payments to affected pensioners rising from K31.8 million in June to K39.6 million in July.

NAPSA Director General Muyangwa Muyangwa says the authority has paid K119.1 million in pension benefits this month to 34,390 beneficiaries nationwide.

He says the reforms have introduced interest-free pension advances, allowing eligible pensioners to access part of their funeral grant without interest, while members can access up to 30% of their retirement benefits as a lump sum within 90 days before retirement.

Mr. Muyangwa says survivors’ pensions have also been extended to eligible beneficiaries of members who die after making more than 180 contributions, while the income replacement rate has increased from 40% to 45%.

He says NAPSA has also introduced supplementary savings and wealth creation products to strengthen retirement security and improve members’ financial wellbeing.
