HH Announces Major Copper Discovery and New Mine for Mumbwa

President Hakainde Hichilema has announced the discovery of significant copper deposits in Mumbwa District, revealing that a new mine will be developed in the area as part of efforts to boost the country's mining sector.

Speaking to a large gathering of residents in Mumbwa, President Hichilema said the newly discovered mineral resources should deliver tangible benefits to local communities through employment opportunities and economic growth.

He explained that the Government has introduced targeted policies aimed at ensuring that people from Mumbwa are prioritised for jobs in both existing and future mining operations. According to the President, these measures are intended to improve livelihoods and stimulate development across the district.

To prepare local residents for employment in the expanding mining industry, President Hichilema announced plans to establish a skills training centre in Mumbwa. The facility will equip young people and other residents with the technical expertise required to secure jobs in the mines expected to open in the coming years.

The President also assured small-scale miners that the Government would renew their mining licences, while urging them to operate responsibly and adhere to environmental standards to prevent pollution of local water sources.

In addition to developments in the mining sector, President Hichilema outlined several infrastructure projects planned for the district. These include the rehabilitation of the Mumbwa–Kasempa Road, along with improvements to other key roads in the area.

He further announced that the Government will upgrade Mumbwa District Hospital into a fully-fledged hospital, construct a modern bus terminus, and establish additional storage depots to support economic activity and improve public services in the district.
