Security Advisory Issued for Zambians Residing in and Travelling to South Africa

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation have issued advice to all Zambian nationals residing or visiting the Republic of South Africa, following escalation of attacks targeted at foreign nationals in certain parts of the country.

Zambians are advised to register with the Zambia High Commission to maintain an up-to-date database of Zambian nationals in South Africa, allow for communication during emergencies, and grant efficient consular information and travel advisories.

They have also encouraged carrying valid identification documents and keeping in safe places, including passports and permits.

Zambians are advised to exercise extreme caution and avoid crowded areas, demonstrations, sporting events and places that show signs of unrest. The Ministry has further said reputable transport services should be used and when in use Zambians should communicate their travel plans to others.

Those travelling to South Africa have been told to stay informed about local developments, protests and high-risk areas and “immediately report any suspicious activity or criminal incidents to local law enforcement authorities.”

The Government through the Ministry of Foreign affairs has issued guidance to remain calm, prioritise personal safety and seek assistance in an emergency. They have provided all relevant contact details in a statement issued on the 23 June.
