African Leaders must secure economic freedom- HH

President Hakainde Hichilema has urged the current generation of African leaders and citizens to secure economic freedom and development for the people.

Speaking after a wreath-laying ceremony at the Freedom Statue for this year’s Africa Day commemorations, the President said that although previous generations fought for political independence, today’s leaders must look to change economies to improve the livelihoods of citizens.

The President emphasised the ruling party and opposition must work towards a shared responsibility to promote peace, unity and stability, to improve national development.

He reinforced that economic growth creates job opportunities, skills development and business empowerment programmes for citizens.

The President drew attention to the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) skills training programme and local procurement policy designed to empower youths and artisans. He highlighted the training programmes in carpentry and welding that have led to young people producing and supplying desks to schools; not only creating employment opportunities but also improving learning conditions for pupils.

President Hichilema said that these interventions and the free education policy have contributed to increased access to improved learning standards across the country.

He emphasised the need for serious and responsible leadership with a commitment to deliver tangible results for citizens. With the upcoming elections in August, the President reinstated the need for peace and unity to protect Zambia’s democratic stability. He added that citizens must feel free to participate in political activities and express their views without fear.
