UPND Launches Intra-Party Elections Ahead of 2026 General Election
The United Party for National Development (UPND) has launched a comprehensive round of intra-party elections spanning all levels of its organisational structure, as the ruling party moves to consolidate internal democracy ahead of next year's general election.
UPND Chairperson for Elections and Campaigns, Likando Mufalali, confirmed that elections for branch, ward, constituency, district and provincial officials are already underway, with a general assembly scheduled for 15th April at which the National Management Committee and Party President will be formally elected. Mr Mufalali stressed that the process is open to any eligible member wishing to contest.
Mr Mufalali indicated that a further media briefing would be convened to address what he described as misinformation circulating about the party's internal governance.
UPND Media Director Mark Simuuwe added that the party is awaiting publication of new constituency boundaries by the Electoral Commission of Zambia before proceeding with certain structural elections, reaffirming the party's commitment to operating within the legal framework.
The internal elections form a critical plank of the UPND's broader preparations for the 2026 polls. A credible and transparent internal process will be essential to projecting unity and legitimacy for the upcoming August elections.
