Nkandu Warns MPs Against Drifting from Constituents

Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts Elvis Nkandu has raised concern that MPS are increasingly “divorcing themselves” from their constituents once elected, weakening both public trust and President Hakainde Hichilema’s policy agenda.

Nkandu observed that it is common for MPs to drift away from the communities that voted them into office, often choosing instead to surround themselves with new social circles. This, he argued, creates distance between leaders and the people they represent, eroding confidence in government and leaving citizens feeling ignored or disenfranchised.

Nkandu warned that such detachment carries long-term risks. When MPs lose touch with their grassroots base, it becomes difficult for them to reconnect with society during or after their time in office. The minister stressed that maintaining close, consistent communication with constituents is not only vital for delivering on promises but also for ensuring democratic legitimacy and stability.

He urged elected officials to stay visible, accessible, and accountable throughout their mandate.
