Israel Appoints First Resident Ambassador to Zambia

Israel has appointed Ofra Farhi as its first resident ambassador to Zambia ahead of opening a new embassy in Lusaka this August.

Ms Farhi, who currently serves as Israel's non-resident ambassador, will transition to the permanent role when the embassy opens. The seasoned diplomat previously served as Israel's deputy ambassador to Italy and held senior positions within Israel's Foreign Ministry.

Foreign Affairs Minister Mulambo Haimbe has welcomed Israel's decision to establish a permanent diplomatic presence, describing it as "a significant milestone in a longstanding friendship" between the two nations.

Minister Haimbe is expected to travel to Israel later this week for bilateral discussions on enhanced cooperation in trade, technology, and development assistance.

Speaking at the AJC Global Forum in April, President Hakainde Hichilema emphasised the partnership's importance: "Zambia enjoys excellent relations with the state of Israel. These bonds remain strong and are rooted in shared principles."

The embassy opening reflects Israel's broader strategy to deepen engagement with African nations, particularly in agricultural technology, water management, and security cooperation. The permanent Israeli diplomatic presence in the country is expected to facilitate increased investment and technical cooperation in mining technology and sustainable agriculture.
