Zambia is in mourning following the passing of former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu, who served as the country’s sixth president from 2015 to 2021. The news, confirmed by the Lungu family, has drawn an outpouring of grief and tributes from across the nation.

In an official statement, President Hakainde Hichilema conveyed his condolences to the Lungu family, including former First Lady Esther Lungu, the Patriotic Front party and its members.

“It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that we have been informed of the passing on of the Sixth President of the Republic of Zambia, His Excellency Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, by his family,” read the statement issued by President Hichilema.

President Hichilema urged all Zambians to set aside political and personal differences during this time of national mourning and come together in solidarity to honour Lungu’s legacy.

“As Africans, and more so as Christians, this moment calls for solemnity, unity, and an outpouring of love and compassion. Let us come together as one people to honour the life of President Lungu,” President Hichilema urged.

He further encouraged citizens to support the bereaved family and to uphold the values of peace, dignity, and unity that define Zambia’s national identity. Lungu’s time in office marked a significant chapter in the country’s democratic development.
