Voters Turn Out for Lumezi Parliamentary By-Election

Voting is proceeding smoothly across Lumezi constituency , with electoral officials praising the peaceful and orderly conduct of voters as they cast their ballots in today's parliamentary by-election.

The polls opened punctually at 06:00 local time across most of the constituency's 88 polling stations, with electoral officers demonstrating their commitment to transparency and efficiency. At Sikatengwa 1 and 2 polling stations, presiding officers were observed opening the stations precisely on schedule, setting a positive tone for the day's proceedings.

Voters have been forming orderly queues at polling stations throughout the constituency, which serves over 53,000 registered voters. The atmosphere has been notably calm and peaceful, reflecting the democratic maturity of the Lumezi electorate.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has taken measures to ensure all voters can participate in the democratic process. While most polling stations on the plateau opened at the scheduled time, those located in the valley areas may open later in the day due to transport challenges and accessibility issues on some roads.

The by-election has proceeded following constructive dialogue between the Electoral Commission and political parties regarding ballot papers. ECZ Commissioner Major General Vincent Mukanda highlighted the commission's dedication to transparency, noting that extensive stakeholder engagement took place to address concerns and enhance the credibility of the electoral process.

"The commission engaged with stakeholders to enhance transparency of the process," Major General Mukanda stated during a stakeholder meeting ahead of polling day.

The Lumezi parliamentary by-election represents another significant milestone in the country’s democratic journey, showcasing its commitment to peaceful, transparent electoral processes.
