Government Working Towards Kampamba's Safe Return

The Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts has confirmed that Zambia national team midfielder Kelvin Mubanga Kampamba is safe and in good spirits following violent clashes in Tripoli, Libya, where he currently plays for Al Madina SC.

According to a formal statement issued by the Ministry yesterday, it is working closely with relevant government agencies to secure Kampamba’s safe return to Zambia.

Principal Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Nchimunya Ng’andu explained that they had established direct contact with Kampamba and were actively monitoring the deteriorating security situation in the Libyan capital.

“We want to assure the nation and the football community at large that Mr. Kelvin Mubanga Kampamba is safe,” said Ng’andu.

“We spoke with him directly. He is calm and has expressed readiness to return home, given the circumstances,” continued the PPRO.

Armed clashes and gunfire erupted overnight in the city centre and other parts of Tripoli after reports Abdel Ghani al-Kikli, the head of one of Libya’s most powerful militias, had been killed.

Ng’andu also called for calm from the public and football stakeholders, as the department “works diligently and swiftly to ensure Mr Kampamba’s safe return.”

“The ministry continues to stand with all our sportsmen and women wherever they are in the world and remains dedicated to safeguarding their lives and careers,” concluded Ng’andu.

Kampamba, a key member of the Chipolopolo squad, joined Al Madina SC in early 2024 from Al-Nasr and went on to make 6 goal contributions in all competitions this season.

We pray for his safe return.
