President Hichilema Credits Zambians for Telegraph Recognition

President Hakainde Hichilema has attributed his recognition by UK newspaper The Telegraph as one of the world's top leaders to the patience, resilience and determination of the Zambian people.

The Telegraph named President Hichilema among the top world leaders of 2025, describing him as Africa's rising figure caught in the Trump-Xi power tussle, noting he has turned Zambia into a prize coveted by the United States and China.

In a statement on Sunday, State House Chief Communications Specialist Clayson Hamasaka said the recognition reflects Zambia's rising profile on the international stage and acknowledges the country's steady economic recovery despite profound challenges including a debt crisis, COVID-19 pandemic, and severe drought.

Mr Hamasaka said President Hichilema acknowledged the spirit of solidarity that has united citizens, the private sector, and cooperating partners in advancing national recovery.

The President noted that the recognition marks an important milestone but not a destination, affirming that significant work remains to accelerate economic growth, create sustainable jobs and reduce the cost of living for ordinary citizens.

Stakeholders have praised the recognition. Diplomatic expert Golden Mapulanga said President Hichilema deserves recognition for steering Zambia from debt default through reforms including the Free Education Policy.

Centre for Sustainable Democracy and Governance Executive Director Caroline Katotobwe described the recognition as a global achievement for all Zambians, praising the President's effective management of major economic challenges.
