ECZ Registers Over 259,000 New Voters

The Electoral Commission of Zambia has extended the accreditation period for political party observers to October 31, 2025, allowing them to participate in the ongoing voter registration exercise.

ECZ Chairperson Mwangala Zaloumis said the decision follows requests from political parties seeking additional time for accreditation.

Speaking during a press briefing in Lusaka today, Mrs Zaloumis explained that stakeholders can apply through their respective District Registration Officers and are permitted to submit a maximum of three observers per constituency.

However, she cautioned that it is too early for stakeholders to call for an extension of the voter registration exercise itself, noting that any such decision would be based on data and operational realities.

Meanwhile, ECZ Chief Electoral Officer Brown Kasaro revealed that the Commission has registered over 259,000 new voters and recorded 284,000 updates and transfers since the exercise began.

Mr Kasaro said these figures reflect progress from Phases One and Two of the registration exercise.

He announced that Phase Four will commence tomorrow, Tuesday, October 28, 2025, following the completion of Phase Three.

The voter registration exercise is a critical component of preparations for the 2026 general elections, with the ECZ working to ensure all eligible Zambians have the opportunity to register and exercise their democratic rights.

The Commission has deployed registration teams across the country to reach voters in all constituencies.
