ECZ Launches Voter Registration Drive Ahead of 2026 Elections
The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) officially opened the mass voter registration exercise on Sunday, setting in motion preparations for the 2026 general election.
The nationwide drive, which runs until 11 November, aims to capture both first-time voters and those needing to update their details.
Mwangala Zaloumis, chairperson of the ECZ, outlined the comprehensive scope of the exercise during the launch event. The commission will not only register new voters but also replace lost or damaged voter cards, facilitate transfers for citizens who have relocated, and correct errors in existing voter records.
"We have deployed trained facilitators across the country to ensure a smooth and efficient registration process," Ms Zaloumis said, seeking to reassure the nation of the commission's readiness.
In a bid to maintain credibility, the ECZ is accrediting independent observers and monitors to oversee the registration process—a move welcomed by democracy advocates in the southern African nation.
Ms Zaloumis issued a particular call to young Zambians, urging those who have recently turned 18, or who will reach that age by April 2026, to take advantage of the registration window.
The only requirements are Zambian citizenship and possession of a valid National Registration Card (NRC).
The 2026 general election will be closely watched both domestically and internationally, as the country continues to navigate economic challenges whilst strengthening its democratic institutions.
With a young and growing population, youth turnout could prove decisive in shaping the country's political landscape for years to come.
