HH Addresses United Nations General Assembly In Productive Second Day In New York

Yesterday, President Hakainde Hichilema made a speech during the United Nations (UN) 77th General Assembly in New York.

The speech discussed the impact of the Russian invasion in Ukraine and, in particular, its effects on economic and social development.

He said that even a few months of war could “erase decades of progress” in the fight to eliminate poverty.

He described how countries across Africa are suffering from extreme spikes in food prices, resulting in many being unable to afford basic food products.

He stated, “War in any part of the world ... has a damaging effect on economic activity, which derails our collective fight against poverty and hunger.”

Further, he also explained the negative impacts of climate change in Zambia.

He outlined how last year, half of the country experienced total crop failure due to severe drought. Meanwhile, the other half of the country experienced a poor harvest due to flooding. Both having dramatic effects on the provision of food.

He told the General Assembly, “Such extreme weather events are a timely reminder of the grave consequences of climate change.”

Additionally, the president also held meetings with the US Ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas Greenfield. During the meeting, the two discussed ways in which the US and Zambia could strengthen their collaboration in trade and investment.

Following the deal struck between Zambia and the IMF, the president met with Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva where she expressed her “gladness at the open and frank discussions that led to Zambia’s IMF-supported program.”

Finally, President Hichilema met with David Malpass, President of the World Bank. Here it was confirmed that the Group would distribute $750 million to Zambia for projects related to health, education and social assistance.

During his time in New York, President Hichilema further defined his commitment to the people of Zambia. The bilateral meetings held between the president and institutions such as the UN, World Bank, and IMF reflect the positive path for Zambian development under the New Dawn Government.
