The President has announced the government is looking into a Gender and Equity Commission to address the challenges Zambia currently faces when it comes to women’s equality.

Zambia has received a fair amount of bad press since Lungu came to power, over the release of General Kanene from prison and his subsequent appointment as Gender Equality Ambassador – despite being a known sexual offender.

The President said documents such as the National Gender Policy of 2014 and the Anti-Gender Based Violence Act number 1 of 2011 require further support to yield the required results.

Women in Zambia are still facing great social injustices such as a lack of access to finances, fair justice and access to land etc.

President Lungu made these announcements at the International Women’s Day event titled ‘Think Equal, Build Smart, Innovate Change.’
