US Gifts Zambia New HIV Prevention Medication

Zambia has received its first US-funded shipment of Lenacapavir, a twice-yearly HIV prevention medication that is being introduced as part of efforts to reduce new infections.

The treatment will be provided free of charge to eligible groups, including women and people considered at higher risk of contracting HIV.

More than 200 women have already begun receiving Lenacapavir at UTH Women and Newborn Hospital, according to Senior Medical Superintendent Mukatimui Munalula.

The Ministry of Health welcomed the arrival of the medication, saying it will provide additional support to Zambia’s existing HIV prevention programmes.

US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Frank Garcia said the funding forms part of American support for government-led health priorities in Zambia. He also highlighted efforts to strengthen local capacity and develop a more sustainable healthcare system.
